Lake Edith Y.M.C.A. Camp Timeline

1916

The General Secretary of the Y.M.C.A. travelled by train to select a location for a camp site in Jasper National Park.

1920

A five year lease was signed in May.

1922

The first year of operation using tents

1924

A large log building, built by the Otto brothers, is utilized for the camp.

1930

A seven room lodge is built with added accommodation.

1942

The camp is closed due to WWII.

1946

The camp reopens after the war.

1950

Cottages, washrooms and laundry are added to the camp.

1953

The name was changed from Lake Edith YMCA Camp to Lake Edith Lodge.

1955

A panabode is added to the camp with accommodation and washrooms.

1956

A request is made to Jasper National Park to install pump and well.

1957

Propane heaters were added to the camp.

1959

The forestry telephone line was connected to the camp.

1960

A lease is granted for 10 years.

1961

Two more panabodes were added to the camp.

1962-63

Tent cabins were replaced with walled cabins.

1966

A request is made for a 10 year lease from 1970-80

1972

Jasper National Park will not renew the YMCA lease beyond 1975 as it wants the site for day use.

1974

Compensation of $73,000 paid to the YMCA for improvements.

1975

Last summer of operation for the Lake Edith Lodge.

1976

Several buildings were relocated to Wabasso Campground, Mile 45 Warden Station, Cavell Warden Station, Decoigne Warden Station and the Jasper Fish Hatchery.
