Railway Houses

In 1923 the Canadian Northern Railway subdivision at Lucerne was closed when the Grand Trunk Pacific (GTP) and the Canadian Northern (CNo) Railways were amalgamated to form the Canadian National Railway (CNR). Because of this closure, many Lucerne railway workers and their families moved to Jasper, adding to Jasper’s housing shortage. In 1924 the Canadian National Railway secured 15 lots on Blocks 13 and 14 and built small cottages for their employees. These cottages were built on lots spaced throughout the two blocks and were eventually sold to CNR employees.
